Artist Statement and Biography
Joanna Gifford is an artist and art advocate working within the field of mixed media with an emphasis in ceramics. Gifford creates using a generative methodology that she developed and outlined in her thesis "Revealing the Metaphysical: Edges/Actions/Layers". This methodology emphasizes the importance of the connection between the physical and the metaphysical. It also highlights the interplay between processes, both mental and physical, which allow, at varying values (which can be tuned and altered by the artist) to create an unbroken lineage from piece to piece, and even within a singular piece. She does not adhere to doctrine or ideology, instead using experience and curiosity to guide her.
Gifford received her BFA from The University of Texas at Tyler in 2010, her MA from UT Tyler in 2017 and her MFA from UT Tyler in 2018. She is one of the founding members of the ASG Art Collective, part of the etx Creatives leadership team, and a board member for Gallery Main Street. She is currently teaching ceramics as an adjunct art professor at The University of Texas at Tyler, making new works in her private studio, and preparing for upcoming exhibitions.
